Home care or a care home: which is right for your family?

Home care or a care home: which is right for your family?

When someone you love starts to need more help, it can be hard to know whether to arrange care at home or look at a care home. Here are some of the things families tell us they weigh up.

Staying in familiar surroundings

Home care lets people stay in the place they know, with their own routines, belongings, pets and neighbours. For many people, and especially those living with dementia, that familiarity makes a real difference to their wellbeing.

One-to-one attention

During a home care visit, the carer’s attention is entirely on the person they are supporting. Care can be as little as a 30-minute visit or as much as 24-hour live-in care.

Flexibility

Home care can start quickly, change as needs change and fit around family support. Respite care at home can also give family carers a well-earned break.

When a care home may be better

If someone needs a high level of nursing care, or would benefit from company around the clock in a shared setting, a nursing or residential home may be the right choice. Every situation is different.
